How much do you know about warranties?

Several types of warranties can apply to goods.

Legal warranties apply automatically free of charge when you purchase or rent goods. They also allow you to demand that the goods have a reasonable lifetime and can be used for the purpose for which they are normally intended.

The basic warranty (e.g., warranty from the merchant or manufacturer) is also free of charge, but the merchant or manufacturer is not required to provide one. If the merchant or manufacturer does provide a basic warranty, they determine its length.

Lastly, the additional warranty extends or is added to the basic warranty. Such warranties are available for purchase. Merchants that offer you an additional warranty must abide by certain obligations, such as informing you of the legal and basic warranties.
