Here are some solutions to consider if the business where your prepaid card is redeemable closes or goes bankrupt.
Businesses in the same chain
You can check if another merchant in the same chain will honour your card.
Card purchased from a third party
If you purchased the card from a third party (for example, a business selling various packages) verify this business’s refund and return policy. Merchants are free to set their own refund and return policies. They must, however, comply with the rules they have put in place.
Card purchased on a group purchasing Web site
For a card purchased on a group purchasing Web site, check out the site’s refund policy or terms of use.
Card purchased from a merchant that has gone out of business
If no exchange or refund policy is provided, or if you purchased the card directly from a merchant who has gone bankrupt, you can contact a lawyer if large sums are involved.
You may also contact the trustee representing the bankrupt business. The Office of the Superintendant of Bankruptcy Canada site allows you to verify if a business is in bankruptcy and find the trustee representing it.
